Staying on Track During the Holidays

As we enter into the holiday season, there are temptations to veer off the “healthy eating track” around almost every corner. Temptations such as pie, candy, bread, holiday drinks, alcohol..  Plus, the fact that it gets dark before 5:00pm doesn’t help. So, how can you stay motivated during the holidays? Below are a few tips/tricks I’ve used and am planning to use this holiday season.

1. Think before you eat. As your hand is reaching out for a frosted Christmas cookie, think to yourself, “do I NEED this?”. 9/10 chances, the answer will be no (unless it’s a “to die for” cookie). Put the cookie down and turn your back to it so it’s no longer in sight. You will thank yourself later! Don’t eat to be polite either – if it’s not aligned with your goals, then why set yourself back?

2. Stay hydrated! Now that cold weather has arrived, people often forget to drink water because they don’t feel hot like they do during summer. But don’t let the chill fool you! Your body still needs water, and ice water keeps you full and boosts your metabolism.

3. Bring healthy dishes to parties. I love bringing healthier dishes to parties because then I know there will be something there for me to snack on without having to feel guilty.

4. Keep moving. Yes, it’s cold, dark, and possibly snowy outside, but your body will thank you if you stay off the couch. No, this doesn’t mean you have to go for a 10-mile run in the snow. Instead, head to the gym and walk on the treadmill, do an at-home workout, or do jumping jacks during commercial breaks. Personally, staying active helps me not only physically, but mentally, and I am much more productive and positive when I’ve been moving.

5. Treat yourself to your absolute favorite holiday snacks. I will most certainly be chowing down on my favorite holiday treats (Christmas breakfast and skinny peppermint mochas to name a couple). Figure out when you will treat yourself and work around it. That way when you’re enjoying a delicious, “bad” meal, you won’t feel guilty. Instead, you will have known you’ve earned it!
